Paddle Subscription Upgrade Affiliate Commissions: Proration Guide

Calculate the commissionable change in collected subscription revenue, not the headline price difference, and keep every proration adjustment auditable.

How should affiliate commissions work when a Paddle subscription changes?

Short answer: Keep the original affiliate attribution attached to the customer and subscription. When a Paddle Billing plan changes, determine whether your written commission policy covers upgrades, then calculate commission on the eligible amount actually billed or collected. A change to a subscription's catalog price is not itself a paid transaction. Do not credit the same renewal, upgrade, or refund twice.

This matters when a customer moves from a monthly plan to an annual plan, adds seats, or downgrades halfway through a cycle. Paddle can calculate prorated credits and charges, and the transaction may contain negative line amounts. The accounting outcome depends on the selected proration billing mode. For refund-specific processing, read our Paddle affiliate refund reconciliation guide.

If a subscription pauses or resumes rather than changing price, use our Paddle pause and resume affiliate commission guide to distinguish lifecycle events from eligible paid renewals.

Understand Paddle's proration modes before calculating rewards

Paddle Billing's proration documentation distinguishes prorating now, prorating at the next billing date, charging a full amount now or later, and not billing for a change. A product or price replacement can therefore alter the subscription without creating an immediately collectible amount. Record the mode used in the change request alongside the effective time and affected items.

Billing treatmentAffiliate commission implication
Prorated amount billed immediatelyEvaluate the settled transaction's eligible net increase once payment qualifies.
Proration billed at next renewalWait for the subsequent qualifying transaction rather than awarding a commission at the plan-change event.
Full amount billed immediatelyApply the program's rule to the qualifying collected amount, avoiding duplicate credit for the original cycle.
No billing for the changeRecord the plan change, but do not create a revenue-based commission solely from that event.

For a billing-frequency switch, Paddle requires recurring items on the subscription to share the same interval. Its upgrade and downgrade guide also says that the update API replaces the items list, so omitted items can be removed. That is an integration consideration, not a commission calculation shortcut.

Define the eligible revenue base in the affiliate agreement

Choose whether commissions apply to the first purchase, each renewal, positive upgrade deltas, or a fixed number of billing periods. State whether tax, discounts, refunds, credits, fees and setup charges are included. Without this definition, two engineers can calculate different commissions from the same Paddle transaction while both believe they are following the policy.

A robust policy might say: "For an eligible upgrade, award 15% of additional net subscription revenue collected after discounts and excluding tax; do not commission a downgrade credit. Reverse commission proportionally on an approved refund." This is an illustrative rule, not a Paddle default. A program that pays only first-purchase commissions would instead create no upgrade reward.

Worked example: mid-cycle upgrade

Assume a customer originally pays $60 for a monthly plan. Halfway through the month they move to a $100 plan. For illustration only, assume the billing engine creates a $30 credit for the unused old plan and a $50 charge for the unused new plan. The net immediate incremental amount is $20. At a 15% upgrade commission rate, the eligible commission is $3, provided the entire $20 is eligible and payment settles. It is not $15 on the $100 headline price, nor $6 on the $40 full-month price difference.

Actual proration depends on billing timestamps, discounts, tax settings and currency precision. Paddle computes proration to the minute, so never assume exactly half a cycle in production. Inspect the real transaction and its line items.

Persist the IDs and monetary fields needed for reconciliation

Store the internal account ID, affiliate ID, Paddle customer ID, subscription ID, original transaction ID, plan-change request ID or internal operation ID, new transaction ID, price IDs, eligible amount in minor currency units, currency, rule version and commission status. For transaction lines, retain their original sign and eligibility classification. Do not discard negative amounts because they can represent the credit that offsets an upgrade charge.

Paddle's proration processing update explains that prorated changes appear on transactions and line quantities or amounts may be negative. A ledger that sums only positive line items can substantially overstate affiliate earnings. Store the original provider payload reference for audit, but avoid retaining unnecessary personal data.

An idempotent commission workflow for plan changes

  1. Capture the original referral against a stable SaaS account identity and enforce the program's attribution window.
  2. Record the requested subscription change and proration billing mode before applying it.
  3. Verify the Paddle webhook signature, persist event IDs, and fetch canonical transaction data if a payload is incomplete.
  4. Map transaction items to the subscription and identify which charges and credits are commissionable.
  5. Wait for the qualifying completed or paid transaction according to the contract; a subscription update alone is not sufficient.
  6. Calculate the incremental commission in minor currency units, rounding only at the defined ledger boundary.
  7. Insert one pending ledger entry keyed by program, affiliate, transaction and commission rule; reject duplicates.
  8. Apply refund or chargeback adjustments as linked entries, then approve and pay only after the review period.

Keep webhook delivery deduplication separate from business-event deduplication. Multiple notifications may describe the same underlying transaction. If a webhook arrives before its subscription-to-affiliate mapping exists, retry reconciliation rather than assigning a random partner. See our affiliate software for subscription businesses guide for platform selection considerations.

Handle downgrades, annual switches and refund edge cases

Downgrade with a credit balance

A downgrade can produce a negative adjustment or a credit that applies later. A negative amount is not automatically a cash refund, and the contract must define whether the affiliate's prior earnings are reduced. Do not subtract a future credit twice when it is later applied to a renewal invoice.

Monthly to annual billing

An annual conversion can produce a much larger invoice than a monthly renewal. If the policy pays on incremental annual cash, apply the published cap or duration rule. If it pays on monthly-equivalent recurring revenue, use a consistent normalization rule rather than treating the full annual amount as one month of growth.

Refund after a paid upgrade

Match any approved refund to the specific original transaction and commission. Apply a correcting ledger entry rather than editing the paid amount in place. For a refund that affects only an ineligible setup fee, do not reverse subscription commission by a blanket percentage.

Pre-launch QA checklist

  1. Test an immediate prorated upgrade with both positive and negative transaction lines.
  2. Test next-cycle proration and confirm no premature commission.
  3. Test a no-bill plan change and verify zero revenue-based reward.
  4. Change billing frequency and inspect subscription item replacement.
  5. Replay identical webhook events and confirm one ledger entry.
  6. Test a partial refund and ensure only the related commission is adjusted.
  7. Check currencies, minor-unit rounding and a discount or tax exclusion.
  8. Reconcile total eligible transaction amounts and net approved commissions for the period.

Frequently asked questions

Does every Paddle upgrade create a commission?

No. Eligibility depends on your affiliate agreement and whether a qualifying billing event occurs. A plan-change notification by itself does not prove collected revenue.

Can negative Paddle transaction lines be ignored?

No. They can represent credits associated with prorated changes and are essential to calculating the net eligible amount.

Should an annual upgrade pay commission on the entire invoice?

Only if the documented program policy permits it. Some programs limit commission duration or base it on incremental eligible revenue.
