When should affiliate commissions stop after a Paddle cancellation?
Short answer: Stop creating new revenue-based affiliate commissions when there are no further eligible paid transactions, not merely when a customer clicks Cancel. In Paddle Billing, a cancellation may be scheduled for the end of the billing period or applied immediately. Those are different lifecycle events. Your affiliate policy must also specify whether already earned commissions survive cancellation and how outstanding invoices or refunds are handled.
A cancellation is not a refund. A customer who cancels future renewals may still have paid for the current period. Preserve legitimate rewards for completed eligible transactions unless your published terms establish a valid reversal condition. Our Paddle refund reconciliation guide covers payment adjustments separately.
Immediate versus scheduled cancellation
| Paddle state | Billing implication | Commission treatment to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Cancellation requested for next billing period | Subscription remains active until the scheduled effective date | Do not cancel an already eligible paid invoice; prevent future rewards without payment |
| Immediate cancellation | Subscription status becomes canceled right away | Stop future accrual from the subscription; review existing unpaid and paid transactions |
| Past-due subscription scheduled to cancel | Status may remain past due until the effective date | Do not approve uncollected invoice rewards |
| Manually collected invoice remains open | Some outstanding invoices may remain due | Reconcile separately if later paid and eligible under terms |
| Customer returns after cancellation | A new subscription is required | Apply your new-subscription versus retained-attribution rule |
Paddle's cancellation guide states that cancellation defaults to the end of the current billing period, while the API accepts effective_from=immediately. A canceled subscription cannot be reinstated. The API reference documents that paused subscriptions can only be canceled immediately.
Choose the correct event and effective date
For a scheduled cancellation, Paddle creates a scheduled_change and sends subscription.updated; the subscription does not become canceled immediately. When the change takes effect, subscription.canceled is emitted. For immediate cancellation, the canceled state and cancellation event occur right away. These differences are documented in Paddle's subscription.canceled webhook.
Store the subscription ID, event ID, event timestamp, scheduled change action and effective date. Paddle describes at-least-once webhook delivery and possible out-of-order events. Deduplicate by event ID, compare timestamps and periodically reconcile the local subscription state with Paddle. Do not generate or reverse commissions simply because the same cancellation notification was delivered twice.
Build a cancellation-safe commission policy
- Define the commissionable event: an eligible collected transaction, not the subscription status alone.
- Define the cutoff: choose whether future commissions stop at the last eligible payment, the effective cancellation date or another explicitly described condition.
- Protect earned balances: clarify whether a previously approved commission is payable after cancellation if the underlying sale was not refunded.
- Separate collection modes: Paddle says automatically collected unpaid transactions are canceled on cancellation, while manually collected invoices can remain open and due.
- Capture refunds and adjustments: a later refund may justify a commission adjustment under your contract, even after the subscription has ended.
- Handle return customers: decide whether a newly created subscription inherits an existing partner attribution or requires a fresh qualifying referral.
- Version the rules: store the applicable policy version with each affiliate relationship so changing terms does not silently rewrite old obligations.
The cancellation cutoff should not be confused with a pause or resume. Read Paddle pause and resume commissions for a subscription that may continue under the same ID.
Worked example: a cancellation near renewal
Assume a customer paid $200 for an eligible monthly subscription on 1 November, generating a pending $40 commission at a hypothetical 20% rate. On 18 November the customer schedules cancellation for 1 December. Under a paid-invoice policy, the $40 candidate remains subject to the normal approval and refund rules; scheduling cancellation does not by itself erase the November payment. No new December commission is generated unless another eligible transaction is actually collected.
Now consider a past-due customer whose November invoice has not been paid. If the subscription is scheduled to cancel later, that invoice is not commissionable under a collected-revenue policy until a qualifying payment arrives. If a manually collected invoice is paid after cancellation, the agreement must say whether it remains eligible. These examples describe policy choices, not Paddle's automatic affiliate behavior.
Edge cases: cancellation close to a billing boundary
A cancellation requested shortly before renewal deserves extra care. Paddle documents restrictions on changing a subscription within 30 minutes of the next billing date, so operations teams should not assume every late request can be applied immediately. Record when the request was submitted, when the change was accepted and the effective date returned by the API. If an invoice was already created or a collection attempt is underway, reconcile that transaction on its own merits instead of guessing from the cancellation timestamp. A support agent should be able to explain why an invoice was or was not commissionable using the actual transaction record and the program policy.
Testing checklist for subscription operations
- Schedule a cancellation and verify the system records the future effective date.
- Cancel immediately and verify no new commission is created from the cancellation event.
- Test a past-due subscription and distinguish unpaid invoices from paid ones.
- Compare automatic and manual collection treatment for outstanding transactions.
- Replay the same webhook and process events out of order without double reversals.
- Verify a later partial refund produces a linked adjustment, not an unexplained deletion.
- Confirm a returning customer creates a new Paddle subscription and follows the published attribution rule.
Frequently asked questions
Does scheduled cancellation immediately stop an active subscription?
No. Paddle normally retains the current status until the scheduled effective date.
Can a canceled Paddle subscription be reactivated?
No. Paddle documents that canceled subscriptions cannot be reinstated; a returning customer needs a new subscription.
Should cancellation claw back all earlier affiliate payments?
Not automatically. Clawbacks should be tied to your published eligibility and refund terms, with a traceable financial reason.
