How do you convert a PartnerStack lead into a customer?
Short answer: Preserve the original Lead key and partner key in the CRM, reconcile the qualified prospect to a stable customer ID, then use the documented PartnerStack Lead conversion endpoint when appropriate. Keep the concepts of lead conversion, customer creation and paid commission separate. A converted Lead is not automatically a paid sale.
PartnerStack documents POST /api/v2/leads/{lead_key}/convert, where lead_key can refer to a Lead key or external_key. The body can include a customer identifier and email. Confirm API access and plan entitlements before implementing this integration. See Convert a Lead API.
Keep Lead, CRM customer and billing customer separate
| Record | Reference | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Partner | partnerstack_partner_key | Identifies the referral owner |
| Submitted Lead | partnerstack_lead_key | Preserves original submission and review |
| CRM contact/account | Durable CRM IDs | Sales qualification and deduplication |
| Billing customer | Processor customer ID | Payment, invoices and refunds |
PartnerStack's CRM sync documentation recommends fields named partnerstack_partner_key and partnerstack_lead_key. Preserve these fields when a contact is merged, rather than overwriting referral history with the newest CRM source.
Lead-to-customer tracking implementation
- Submit: store the referring partner, original PartnerStack Lead ID and timestamp, with the minimum prospect data needed for sales follow-up.
- Match: deduplicate against existing contacts and accounts using reliable identifiers. Email is useful for contact matching but should not be the sole legal account key.
- Qualify: separate invalid leads, accepted leads, sales opportunities and actual customers. Make status ownership visible to sales and partner operations.
- Map: choose one stable
customer_keylinked to the CRM and billing identity. Keep a mapping table rather than assuming the systems create identical IDs. - Convert: call the supported endpoint with the approved Lead key only after your workflow's qualification threshold is satisfied.
- Reconcile: link paid billing events to the customer separately and confirm program eligibility before moving commissions from pending to approved.
API example and error handling
The following illustrates the request shape from PartnerStack's API documentation, not a live credentialed request:
POST https://api.partnerstack.com/api/v2/leads/{lead_key}/convert
Content-Type: application/json
{
"customer_key": "crm_customer_123",
"email": "buyer@example.com"
}A successful 200 response means the conversion endpoint accepted the request. It does not demonstrate payment settlement. Handle 400 field errors, 401 authentication failures, 403 missing permissions and 404 unknown Lead keys. Record a safe audit reference and retry status, but never log API secrets in your CRM or public analytics.
Prevent duplicate rewards and attribution disputes
Several partners may introduce one company, or a referral may overlap an existing sales opportunity. Keep fields for first submission, approved sourcing partner, sales influence and commission decision. A CRM merge should not silently produce two partner acquisition payouts.
Use an idempotency key at your integration layer when applying conversion decisions. After an API timeout, query the current customer mapping before repeating the operation. For more detailed matching controls, see our PartnerStack lead deduplication guide; for object selection, review PartnerStack Leads vs Deals.
Acceptance tests before production launch
- One qualified Lead converts to the intended CRM customer with its partner key intact.
- An existing customer submitted again does not automatically receive a second acquisition reward.
- A converted, unpaid Lead remains ineligible for revenue-dependent commissions.
- A won deal with a refunded or failed payment is handled by the contractual adjustment rules.
- Retried API calls do not create duplicated CRM ownership or ledger entries.
- Business users can trace why a partner was credited or declined.
Lead features and integration connections may be limited by PartnerStack plan and permissions. Verify current access rather than assuming every account can use every connector.
Frequently asked questions
Does Lead conversion automatically generate an affiliate payout?
No. API conversion and merchant payment eligibility are distinct workflows.
Can customer_key differ from the Lead key?
Yes. PartnerStack's documented endpoint accepts a separate customer key, allowing the merchant to keep stable CRM identifiers.
Should sales use Deals instead?
That depends on the partner motion and pipeline configuration. Co-selling workflows may need different Deal fields than a referral Lead.
