Can Rewardful block affiliate credit from paid search traffic?
Short answer: Rewardful documents campaign-level Traffic Source Control settings that can ignore referrals arriving from major search engines and specified domains. These controls can support a SaaS program that prohibits search-ad bidding or brand-term interception. They are not a substitute for a written affiliate policy, campaign monitoring and review of legitimate partner traffic.
Rewardful's official Traffic Source Control guide describes an option to ignore major search engines including Google, Bing, Baidu and Yandex, plus a custom-domain exclusion list. The campaign settings overview confirms that traffic source controls are campaign settings. Verify availability in your own account before promising a feature to a client.
Why affiliate paid-search rules matter
Consider a partner who bids on your brand name and sends an existing buyer through their referral link moments before purchase. The resulting conversion may look like a new affiliate acquisition even though your own brand advertising or organic search created the demand. A commission paid in that scenario can increase acquisition cost without producing incremental customers.
Not all search traffic is abusive. A review publisher might rank organically for an independent comparison, and a specialist agency may run approved non-brand campaigns. A blanket block on search engines can therefore exclude legitimate referrals as well as unauthorized ads. Decide the policy before enabling a broad exclusion.
Compare three policy approaches
| Policy | Benefit | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Prohibit all paid search | Simple enforcement language | May exclude useful approved acquisition |
| Prohibit brand and trademark bidding | Protects branded demand | Requires keyword and ad monitoring |
| Allow approved search partners | Supports controlled growth tests | Needs explicit exceptions and reporting |
Document whether restrictions cover direct brand terms, misspellings, competitor keywords, coupon-related searches, retargeting and trademark use in ad copy. Also specify whether an affiliate may link directly to your domain from an ad or must use an approved landing page.
How to configure Rewardful's documented controls
- Review your program's existing search-ad policy and any contractual exceptions.
- In Rewardful, open the relevant campaign and choose Edit Campaign.
- Find Traffic Source Control and review the major search engine ignore option.
- If your policy calls for broad exclusion, enable the documented setting and save.
- Use the custom-domain list only for specific sources your program intends to ignore.
- Record the date, campaign, administrator and reason for each change.
- Run controlled referral tests and compare outcomes with your written policy.

Testing and false-positive review
Test an authorized direct partner link, a search-engine arrival, a blocked custom-domain source and a permitted non-search referral. Confirm what Rewardful records for each, and whether the expected affiliate is credited. Use test accounts and clearly marked test transactions so finance can exclude them from payouts.
Record the landing URL, source, partner link, test time, expected attribution and observed result. A campaign may have other attribution rules, so an unexpected outcome should trigger investigation rather than an assumption that the domain list is broken. Do not use a browser's referrer alone as a conclusive fraud signal.
Handle suspected violations consistently
When suspicious brand bidding is reported, preserve screenshots, ad URLs, timestamps and campaign evidence. Review the partner agreement, then notify the partner and apply a proportionate response. A warning, commission hold or suspension should follow the published terms and documented evidence. Rewardful also has guidance on suspicious affiliate accounts.
Keep this issue separate from self-referrals. A partner may be a genuine independent publisher yet violate paid-search restrictions. Our self-referral review guide covers different evidence and exceptions. For broader software selection, see affiliate software fraud-detection criteria.
Measure incrementality, not just affiliate clicks
Compare approved partner conversions, new-customer share, branded search overlap, refund rate and commission cost before and after a policy change. If a broad search exclusion reduces affiliate-reported sales, that does not by itself prove the business lost customers. Review billing outcomes and acquisition channels, allowing for attribution windows and seasonality.
