A payment platform integration is not always an affiliate integration
A billing tool's payment API, a merchant's tracking script and an affiliate vendor's commission engine are three different pieces. An integration is useful only when referral identity survives to the paid transaction, the correct revenue amount is attributed, and returns or disputes do not leave incorrect commission balances.
Several billing platforms now provide their own affiliate functions. Others rely on specialized external software or webhooks. A source-documented connector should be treated as a candidate for testing rather than a guarantee that every event in your billing setup is supported.
Compatibility evidence matrix
| Billing platform | Documented route | Evidence limit |
|---|---|---|
| Stripe and Stripe Checkout | Stripe buyer guide, vendor-specific integrations | Verify one-time Checkout versus subscription invoice events |
| Paddle Billing | Paddle Billing buyer guide | Do not equate Paddle Classic support with Paddle Billing |
| Chargebee | FirstPromoter native integration; Tapfiliate; Post Affiliate Pro | FirstPromoter has provider-specific setup; Tapfiliate recurring flows may require Zapier or webhooks |
| Lemon Squeezy | Built-in Lemon Squeezy Affiliates | Merchant pays a documented additional 3% fee on referred orders |
| Polar.sh | External affiliate software may be required | A current, directly verified first-party affiliate product was not established |
| Creem | Native Creem Affiliates and revenue splits | Verify merchant-specific commissions, payout regions and fees |
| Recurly | FirstPromoter native integration; Post Affiliate Pro; Tapfiliate | Test native integration versus API/webhook or Zapier-based renewals |
| Braintree | FirstPromoter native integration; Post Affiliate Pro | Vendor-specific configuration and customer identity fields still required |
Chargebee: check the recurring automation path
Tapfiliate publishes a Chargebee integration guide for conversion tracking, commission amounts and coupon attribution. That same document explains that recurring commissions can require Zapier or webhook configuration. It is incorrect to describe every renewal as fully automatic without validating that extra flow.
Post Affiliate Pro lists Chargebee in its subscription integrations. Compare how affiliate identification is transmitted, what happens to trial conversion and whether webhook retries can create duplicate commissions. Vendor support lists prove a documented route, not a successful deployment in your merchant account.
Lemon Squeezy: native affiliate program first
Lemon Squeezy's merchant documentation explains how to turn on and configure its built-in Affiliates features, manage product eligibility, share referral links and choose payout settings. If you use its storefront URL, tracking can be native; changing the referral destination to an external marketing site requires adding its tracking script.
A significant fee nuance: the current merchant fee document states an additional 3% for each referred order, on top of normal payment platform fees. There can also be affiliate-side fees and payout-country restrictions. Before buying a separate affiliate platform, assess whether native functionality already serves the program.
Polar.sh: do not transfer Stripe claims to Polar
Polar.sh is its own merchant-of-record billing product. A feature list saying a vendor 'works with Stripe' is not proof that it can read Polar subscription events or attach affiliate identity to a Polar checkout. Independent vendors advertise Polar tracking integrations, but their claims require technical validation and are not equivalent to Polar's own documentation.
We did not establish a directly verified built-in Polar merchant affiliate program in the official documentation checked for this guide. Treat Polar compatibility as a specialist integration project: confirm checkout metadata, signed webhooks, subscription renewals, refunds and the payout ledger before naming any tool the 'best' one.
Creem: affiliate tracking alongside merchant-of-record billing
Creem's September 2026 product update describes native affiliates and revenue splits with per-product or per-partner commission settings. Its website positions these alongside one-time payments, subscriptions and usage billing. This is different from an external tracking script bolted onto a separate payments product.
Confirm pricing and commission eligibility with the vendor's current checkout terms. Built-in functionality can simplify reconciliation, but it does not eliminate payout restrictions, refund policy or the need to test recurring and split-revenue edge cases.
Recurly and Braintree: specialist connectors
Post Affiliate Pro publishes a dedicated Recurly integration using an API key, webhook endpoint and recurring-commissions feature. Tapfiliate also publishes a Recurly guide, describing a thank-you-page conversion flow and Zapier-based renewal tracking. Those are materially different setup paths; neither should be described as automatic plug-and-play without review.
For Braintree, Post Affiliate Pro documents a custom field to carry the visitor identifier from checkout into its tracking integration. That is a concrete procedure but it introduces implementation steps and a dependency on correct field propagation. Test duplicate events, subscription renewals and refunds with the merchant's actual Braintree configuration.
What about businesses using more than one billing provider?
A SaaS business may have legacy Stripe subscriptions, new Paddle Billing customers and a separate usage-billed channel. The first decision is whether all of these should share one affiliate ledger. Attribution IDs, currency conversion, chargebacks and customer identity can differ by processor; combining dashboards does not automatically make data consistent.
Build a test matrix for each provider and recurring event and investigate whether the chosen affiliate platform allows independent program identifiers, event deduplication and exports. If coverage is incomplete, a native affiliate program per billing provider may be simpler in the short term, but it fragments partner reporting. This is a design tradeoff rather than a universal recommendation.
A practical compatibility validation checklist
For vendor costs and detailed SaaS buying criteria, start with our SaaS affiliate software guide. Where evidence is incomplete, this guide deliberately records that uncertainty instead of inventing a winner.
- Find current vendor documentation naming the exact billing provider and version.
- Separate initial paid checkout, subscription renewal and trial conversion into different test cases.
- Confirm referral metadata survives hosted checkout and payment links.
- Document refund, chargeback, coupon and plan-change commission treatment.
- Check per-plan API/webhook requirements, payout routes and commission processing fees.
- Avoid publishing claims of 'native integration' when only a custom webhook implementation is documented.
Native integration versus webhook automation: evidence grades
A provider's appearance in an integrations directory is stronger evidence than a generic statement that the affiliate platform supports APIs. FirstPromoter's integration directory lists dedicated guides for Stripe, Paddle Billing, Chargebee, Recurly and Braintree. Its commission documentation describes native integrations for those billing systems and an API route for other providers. Each merchant still needs to configure the correct events and referral identity.
An integration can have multiple evidence levels: native billing connector (vendor-specific setup and commission events), prebuilt tracking plus automation (for example, Tapfiliate with Chargebee via Zapier/webhooks for renewals), custom API/webhook, and unverified. Do not describe an unverified Polar.sh workflow as plug-and-play simply because Stripe is supported.
For Lemon Squeezy, the native affiliate feature may remove the need for a third-party vendor, though its 3% merchant referral fee matters. Creem advertises native affiliates, but payout regions and recurring edge cases require merchant-specific confirmation.
If your product uses only Stripe or Paddle Billing, start with the dedicated Stripe or Paddle Billing buyer guide. Multiple-provider architectures should validate the same referral identity across customer records, currencies and payout ledgers.
- Grade every claimed integration: native, prebuilt automation, custom API or unverified.
- Confirm whether renewal commissions require separate workflow configuration.
- Test customer IDs, webhooks, refunds and duplicate-event handling.
- Avoid multiple thin provider pages until each has distinct buyer intent and verified vendors.
