How to Track Recurring Affiliate Commissions for SaaS

Recurring affiliate commission tracking requires connecting referral attribution to subscription invoices, renewals, refunds and payouts.

Updated 19 October 2026. Independent editorial guidance; no hands-on testing is claimed.

What recurring commission tracking means

A SaaS affiliate may earn a commission on the first subscription payment, every eligible renewal, or a limited number of billing cycles. Tracking must connect the original referral to a customer and subscription, not just a browser click. The commission ledger should record the payment event, commission policy, approval status and payout status separately.

Set up the attribution chain

  1. Capture the referral link or coupon with a timestamp and a program identifier.
  2. Associate the referral with the customer record at signup or checkout, with appropriate consent and retention rules.
  3. Store stable customer and subscription identifiers from the billing provider.
  4. Process verified billing webhooks for initial payments and renewals.
  5. Calculate the eligible commission from the agreed revenue base and commission window.
  6. Reverse or adjust commissions after refunds, disputes and chargebacks.
  7. Reconcile approved commissions with actual affiliate payouts.

Stripe and Paddle event handling

With Paddle Billing, a completed transaction can include the subscription identifier and an origin such as subscription_recurring. Verify webhook signatures and process each event idempotently. With Stripe, use documented invoice and payment events, reconcile subscription status, and verify the exact event semantics in your Stripe API version. Do not pay merely because a subscription was created: a trial or unpaid invoice may not qualify.

Example commission calculation

Assume a customer pays $100 per month and the program offers 20% on the first 12 eligible payments. The gross commission is $20 for each qualifying $100 payment, up to $240 over 12 payments if none are refunded. Taxes, discounts, refunds and payment fees may change the commissionable amount according to the written agreement. This is an illustration, not a market benchmark.

Common implementation mistakes

Do not count webhook retries twice. Do not confuse invoice creation with payment collection. Handle plan upgrades and prorations deliberately. Record whether commissions apply to expansion revenue. Keep a clear audit trail for disputes and affiliate support.
